How We Did We Do?

Hey Folks-

The 2009 Archway School Walk-A-Thon was a blast and an inspiration. What we saw on this lovely Halloween day was a horrifying and hilarious parade of vampires, vampiras, donation boxes and fast-food pitchmen. It was also a demonstration of good spirit, musical talent, community support, endurance and commitment to personal, class and school goals.

We met most of those goals on Saturday, and it is just a matter of follow-through to meet the rest of them. Those of you who haven't yet submitted your pledge money or forms; please do so as soon as you possibly can. None of the results of the day's efforts can be considered complete until the forms are filed and the checks are in. That said, here is what Archway's students did on Halloween:

They walked or earned credit for 2636 laps; equaling 659 miles, nearly a 7% increase over last year's total.
106 out of 112 students participated- that's 95%!
Three Upper Campus Students- Or, Julian and Tikal tied for the Upper campus Top Walker Prize- each walked 12 ½ miles. That's like walking to Fort Mason in San Francisco.

For the Lower Campus, Cecely walked away with the Top Walker Prize. She walked 11 miles. She could have made it to Fisherman's Warf easily. Carina and Jake tied for second place, covering 10 miles each.

Archway Upper Campus Students together gave 36 hours of volunteer time in exchange for lap credits. They helped make the event fun and functional for the entire school.

Every Kindergarten student showed up for the event, winning them the All Together Now Prize of an ice cream party. They also walked up a storm, averaging more than 12 laps each. That's three miles apiece on some fairly short legs. Nice work K.

The First Grade blew away their goal of beating their lap average from last year by 20%. They more than doubled the lap average they walked last year as Kindergartners, averaging over 17 laps apiece. They are in line for an Ice Cream Party, too. As soon as the pledges are in and the results are official, they will have won the Better Than Before Prize for their efforts. Every first grader participated, including Cosmo who came and walked in spite of a rough week. His community spirit and sense of fun are what this event is all about. The First Grade rocks.

The Second Grade also beat that Better Than Before Target. They walked 220 laps, or 20 laps each on average, a 28% increase over last year's 15.6 average. We'll be planning that Ice Cream Party soon. Excellent job, Second Graders.

The Third and Fourth Grades matched their average efforts from last year, and have among them three students who managed great personal achievements. Jake walked through the pain of blistered feet- his determined effort won him a tie for second place for the Top Walker Prize, and made his 4th Grade competitors work their hardest to match him. Carina managed to match Jake's 40 laps, and Cecely amazingly added another mile to that to hit 44 total laps, making her the Lower Campus Top Walker. Nice work, all.

By holding to the same high standard they achieved last year as Third Graders, the 2009-2010 Fourth Grade Class is in position to be the first Lower Campus winners of the A.S. Walker Cup. As soon as the results are official, their achievement will be engraved onto the trophy and they will be presented with the Cup to display in their classroom until next year. Well done, Fourth Grade.
The Fifth Grade walked 218 laps and earned another 20 in volunteer credit. This brought their average lap count to 26.4, almost 7% higher than they earned last year.

The Sixth Grade will be bringing the A.S. Walker Cup to the Upper Campus. Their average lap count was 29.2, with a total of 448 laps credited. They had the highest volunteer participation for the day- Sixth Graders not only walked 338 laps, they also earned 100 lap credits with 15 total hours of volunteer time. Congratulations, Sixth Grade- an excellent team effort.

The Seventh Grade came very close to meeting the bar on the Better Than Before Prize. They walked and earned 370 laps, for an average of 24.7 laps per student. That is a 12% improvement on their average for last year, and only 26 laps shy of the Better Than Before goal. Seventh Graders also made up the bulk of the musical entertainment for the event. Olivia, Alex, Keith and Ameya, along with Teo from the Eighth Grade made up the student members of the two bands that rocked the lunch break.
The Eighth Grade class also improved their lap average this year, by 2 ½ percent. They walked and earned 510 laps, the largest overall total for any class. They also include the three students who had the highest personal lap counts for the day. Tikal, Or, and Julian each walked 50 laps to score a tie for the Top Walker Prize. Excellent sharing, kids.
We are honored and pleased to have been a part of this great effort. Thanks for the opportunity to work with all of you, and thanks for giving so much of your time, effort and endurance to making it a great success.

Sincerely,

David Dawson and Shareen Leland
2009 Walk-A-Thon Co-Chairs
